A disruption could halt gas deliveries to major power plants, potentially causing widespread electricity outages throughout Batam.
“If the main pipeline is damaged, repairs cannot be completed within hours. The entire pipeline system must first be depressurized, and the restoration process could take up to one week,” he explained.
The impact would extend far beyond industrial operations.
Electricity outages would stop clean water pumping systems, disrupt internet connectivity, and leave thousands of households unable to cook using piped natural gas.
“When electricity goes out, water pumps stop operating. Internet services are also affected. Daily life can come to a standstill because all these systems are interconnected,” Wendi added.
Today, PGN’s gas network connects several of Batam’s strategic economic zones, including Muka Kuning, Batu Ampar, Kabil, Eco Green, industrial corridors surrounding the city, and areas near Hang Nadim International Airport.
Several major power generation facilities in the Kabil industrial area also rely heavily on the uninterrupted gas supply delivered through this network.
Given its strategic importance, Wendi emphasized that all construction and excavation activities near pipeline corridors must be carried out under strict supervision to prevent accidental damage to the underground infrastructure.
