STRAIGHTTIME.ASIA, INDONESIA – Beneath the bright skyline of Batam, the humming industrial estates, and the stoves burning inside thousands of homes lies an infrastructure network that rarely captures public attention. Yet, it serves as one of the city’s most critical lifelines.
Stretching 273 kilometers, the gas pipeline network operated by PGN Batam Area delivers natural gas to industrial zones, power plants, and residential customers, forming the backbone of Batam’s round-the-clock energy supply.
Speaking to KE Groups on Wednesday morning (June 24, 2026), Area Head of PGN Batam, Wendi Purwanto, explained that the underground network is far more than an ordinary pipeline.
The system transports high-pressure natural gas, which is reduced from approximately 40 bar to 16 bar before being distributed safely to customers across the city.
“This is a highly critical main distribution network. It cannot be disrupted,” Wendi said while presenting PGN’s gas pipeline map in Batam.
According to him, even a single failure along the main transmission line could trigger a chain reaction with serious consequences.
